Early Literacy & Phonics

At St Michael's, we aim to foster a love of reading in all children and encourage them to read a wide range of books from various authors. Reading is embedded in all areas of the curriculum.

Reading skills are taught as soon as children join us in Reception and continue until they leave the school.

The younger children are grouped and taught Letters and Sounds each day. This is a systematic approach to the teaching of phonics and continues as long as the child requires it. For most children this will end in Year 2. Some children may need this to continue in the following year.

The children in Reception also learn the Jolly Phonics songs and actions to help them to learn the sounds.

This page aims to give you hints and tips on how to help develop your child's early literacy skills.  They will focus on speaking and listening, hands on activities, songs, rhymes, phonics and the early steps of reading and writing.

We hope it's helpful.
