Welcome to Year 5. It is great to see you here!

My name is Miss Lewis and I am the class teacher for year 5. I work alongside my class TA, Mrs Smadi. On this page you will find some information about the different things that we do in Year 5.

Autumn 1:

This half term’s topic is The Ancient Egyptians. We will be learning all about life in ancient Egypt, Mummification, the famous Pharaohs as well as the Ancient Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. We will also be creating an adventure story based on an adventure in an Ancient Egyptian tomb to link in our Literacy work as well as reading the book Kensuke’s Kingdom in Guided Reading.

We have PE on Wednesday afternoons, please make sure that you wear your PE kit to school and have weather appropriate clothing and suitable shoes – most sessions will be outside.

Autumn 2:

This half terms topic is the Best of British. We will be learning about the Geographical features of Britain as well as using our Guided Reading text “Street Child” to look at the history of Britain in the olden days.

PE is still on a Wednesday afternoon so please make sure that you have a weather appropriate PE kit and that you wear this to school on a Wednesday.

Spring 1:

This half terms topic is titled Ancient Greece. We will be learning about life in Ancient Greece as well as using a lot of our oracy skills to hold debates like they did during these times. We will be reading the book Wonder in our Guided Reading sessions and will be starting off the term looking at diary writing. In Maths, we will be extending our multiplication and division skills as well as looking at fractions.

Summer 1:

In this half term, we will be looking at the Mayan Civilisation in our History lessons. We will be exploring their lifestyle as well as looking at their writing and number system. We will be continuing reading Wonder in our Guided Reading sessions and extending our work on decimals and percentages in Maths. The overview for this half term is in the Curriculum Overview section below.

Tuesday 4th May 2021:

We looked at some different Maya artifacts and images relating to the culture of the Maya people in relation to our History topic.

Summer 2:

This half term, we will be looking at the work of Van Gogh in Art and exploring the different ways to draw flowers and plants using different lines, textures and colours. We will finish our Art work with creating our own representation of the famous Van Gogh Sunflower painting. In Computing, we will be looking at online safety and how we can stay safe online. We will be writing newspaper reports in English and focussing on identifying angles in different shapes and converting measurements in Maths. The weekly spellings will also be listed here so if you child has lost them, you can get a copy here. PE is still on a Wednesday afternoon and please make sure that your child wears weather appropriate PE kit to school on this day.
