At St Michael’s we believe that musical development is a vital part of the broad and balanced curriculum.

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. It is a powerful, inclusive means of communication which offers all children opportunities for personal expression, development and reflection.

Every child should experience a range of high-quality musical experiences. We aim to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and nurture their talent as musicians. This will increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement and thus enhance their overall development. All children develop the skills of musical appreciation, singing and composing. We use schemes such as Charanga and Kapow to help deliver enjoyable, interactive music lessons.

We have a thriving choir (who sing at many events, including Young Voices at the O2 and the Berkshire Music Festival at the Hexagon in Reading), and all children have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. We take part in musical events where children can perform both with their peers and with the wider community.
As a school we often join together to share musical learning and experiences.

We ensure that our pupils:

• Perform, listen to, review and evaluate a wide range of music
• Learn to sing and use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others and to use technology appropriately
• Learn to sing as a collective in assemblies and class performances
• Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.
