ABC to Read
We are very lucky and grateful to have Karen from ABC to read come in and work with some of our Year 2 children to help them with their reading. The children love going to Karen two afternoons a week and it's great to see them so engaged with books.

Our Vision
Every child a reader, with the self-confidence and skills to make positive life choices and contribute to their wider community.
Our Mission
Our mission is to transform children’s lives by working with schools, families and the children themselves to provide high quality support in developing literacy skills and building self-confidence.
Our Work
We provide schools with volunteer reading mentors who will motivate, raise self-esteem and help each child they work with to enjoy reading. Our volunteers bring along their own box of books and games provided by ABC to read and make reading fun! They work weekly with each child they support (usually 3 children per volunteer).
ABC to read provides reading mentors to work with children who are struggling with their reading in primary schools across Berkshire. There are many reasons why children might need our help:
- Some are living in areas of significant deprivation.
- Some are shy and have lost confidence because they’ve fallen behind.
- Some don’t speak English at home.
- Some just need a boost to help them catch up.
Receiving support from one of our volunteers each week significantly boosts their confidence, motivation and skills. Teachers tell us that these effects often apply in other areas of their education and lives too.
