Social, Emotional & Mental Health
Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) refers to the ability to express needs, wants, and emotions in a positive way, manage anger and conflict, and cope with frustrations. It includes practicing essential life skills, making responsible decisions, developing good character, following a plan to manage stress, and being resilient during challenging times.
Examples of SEMH needs, as outlined in the SEND Code of Practice, include:
- Anxiety or depression
- Self-harming and substance misuse
- Eating disorders
- Attachment disorder
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
At St. Michael's Easthampstead, we support children's SEMH needs in various ways, recognising that they are a vital part of healthy development and essential for learning and achieving developmental milestones. We have a therapeutic approach to supporting children with social and/or emotional challenges in the classroom.
