Buddy Reading sessions on a Friday afternoon
On a Friday afternoon, we finish the week with buddy reading. The children go to each other's classes and share a book. The older children can support the younger ones, helping them to decode longer words and to explain the meanings of words and ideas. It gives them confidence and allows them to share their learning. When they model how to read a sentence, they practice their own fluency skills.
The younger children see good reading behaviours modelled, they can see the way an older child corrects their mistakes or tackles a trickier word. It also exposes them to a higher level books they wouldn't be able to read on their own.
Year 6 read with Year 3.
Year 5 read with Year 2.
Year 4 read with Year 1.
Acorns aren't left out, older children often choose to give up the last 20 minutes of their lunchtime to come and read to and read with the Acorns.
